Hard or Soft?

No, not boiled eggs, but Brexit!

Firstly I must reaffirm that I voted to stay in the EU; this doesn't mean that I am 100% against leaving.

I still wonder what the majority of Brexit voters really thought what they were voting for/against.

One thing I do know is that they were against foreign political interference, wide-open borders, and the huge cost of membership.

I doubt whether people were against the free market or the customs union.

There is no reason at all why the UK should continue to pay for access to any European 'free market', in the same way as the UK would not charge EU nations for access to the British market.

Of course the UK wishes to continue to trade with Europe, and to allow them to trade with us, the UK wishes to make its own political decisions without interference from Brussels, and the UK wishes to make its own decisions concerning who enters her borders and who she can expel.

Hard or soft? My sixpence is on 'soft-ish', as based on the logic above. I believe it's what would be best for Britain.

Only time will tell.

    1. I can't stand much more of this Hard v Soft malarkey. I wish they'd just GET ON WITH IT.

  2. It's all a smokescreen - they have no guide lines, so haven't a clue what they're doing, and the UK will suffer. A shambles is a good description of the outcome. Has Teresa May made one positive comment to indicate what will happen, and how she will go about it?

    1. I think by keeping her cards close to her chest, she's hoping to avoid criticism, but she is now suggesting that she will be going for hard rather than soft. Somehow I don't believe it.

    2. Somehow, I think that keeping her cards close to her chest has little to do with avoiding criticism, that's impossible, but the fact that she has no more idea than anyone else. It's frightening...

  4. As you yourself pointed out, nobody voted for the European Union originally, they voted for the Common Market and then the beaurocrats began to take more and more control. After we have left, the only way Europe will survive as a political entity is to make all the reforms that would have kept us in if we had been given a say in it. Even the Germans want to have control over their borders now. We are going to be forced to deal with Trump and the American model for the foreseeable future. Now I have depressed myself again...

    1. If one can believe anything you read in the press, countries are queuing-up to trade with the UK. I can imagine the EU joining that queue.

    2. But are they going to BUY from the UK? Of course they'll want to sell to us, but it's buying that generates the much needed cash.

    3. The big companies that I know of do not care one way or the other. Prediction: The Trumpa administration will only settle trade deals on the condition that the British Army support whatever miltary adventures that come into Trump's tiny little brain, otherwise no deal. We were such idiots to leave the EU before these details had been considered.

    1. I'm not so sure. It all depends on how tough they're going to be. Any sign of weakness would be fatal.

  6. I voted ' stay ' too Cro but, we now just have to accept the decision and get on with it, don't we ?!!!
.... and, I think a great percentage that voted ' out ' had no idea about trade and everything else that's involved. Still, it's done now and we must move on ..... I wish they would sort out the bloody railways !!! XXXX

  7. We both voted to stay in the EU Cro, but this is a Democratic country and we have to accept that the 'leaves' won and we have to make the best of it and all pull together.

    2. If Britain is such a Democratic country, how was it that over two million expats were denied the right to vote for their future?

  8. The world seems to be tipping on a precipice and no one knows where it will fall. We all need to hold on tight and hope for the best. However, there is something that makes me believe that there is someplace and somebody that is pulling the strings on all this chaos that is going on.

  9. At first I thought you were talking about garlic...

I think they will force us to hard exit. I am that way inclined to think that I have changed some investments and done something I would never have done before and allowed investment in tobacco. I am also hoping to sell my house before Brexit goes through in 2 years. Downsize and see what happens. What ever does happen life will still happen. It just might cost more for a while.

No matter what PM we have for this Brexit, people would criticise. People need someone to blame for stuff, it makes them feel better.

    What will be, will be.
